Welcome to Kay's Quilt Shop online. We are a full service shop, offering the largest inventory in Southwest Florida for Batik fabric and all things Sashiko. Sashiko is my obsession since I was introduced 5 years ago. It is a Japanese mending technique that I find to be very relaxing. While I have not used it to repair any clothing, I sure do enjoy stitching pieces and displaying them once they are complete.
Sashiko is any easy technique to learn and it is something most any age can master. I have taught to many middle school aged children and adults as well. While sashiko is typically done on indigo fabric with white thread, many enjoy using the many colored threads currently on the market. I have chosen to ice dye some threads and have found that they stitch up beautifully.
I can currently get pre-stamped pieces on several different colored fabrics. I do usually suggest that most stitchers start with the pre-printed panels to help them establish stitch length. I have used other fabrics to draw my own designs.
The thread used for Sashiko is a cotton thread. I always suggest the sashiko thread as it pulls nicely and doesn't bunch up.
Have you ever seen a batik you didn't like? We haven't! There are so many choices and colors options, not to mention the designs. Most batiks work well from either side of the fabrics. I also love, the way they press, so neat and sharp! This makes batiks perfect for piecing. I have also used batik fabrics for clothing. They wash nicely and really don't require a lot of pressing. We have used lots of batiks for cloth napkins for our dinner table. They also wash us nicely and have not stained, even with tomato based foods.
