Heirloom Bag With A Modern Twist

This pretty, useful and bright little bag is a fun way to learn heirloom sewing without the traditional white fabrics. Still, there’s fine Swiss lace and familiar old world style- just updated for today.  Techniques taken from French sewing are easy to learn but they do require patience. Think of it as precision sewing with a twist.  This is a detail oriented sewing class where you will learn lace insertion, wing needle stitching and how to apply gimp. No fancy sewing machine is required, just a straight stitch and zig zag.  If you have more stitches, great!  When you’re done, you have a bag just the right size for cotton balls, thread scraps or doo-dads.  With a little change in measurements, you can make this bag any size you like!  Adapted from a vintage Husqvarna Viking project.



Supply List
Required Kit
(2) coordinating ¼ yd OR fat quarter pretty cotton fabrics
Rotary cutter and ruler
Universal sewing needle size 11 or 12
White thread and full bobbin (prefer Aurifil)
Thread and full bobbin to match fabrics
 
Zig zag foot- note the channel down the center of the underside

Optional (but very desirable) feet:
              
open toe

¼” piecing foot WITHOUT guide
Basic sewing supplies and don’t forget your glasses!

Pre-Class Prep:
Please purchase your kit prior to class.  Heavily starch your fabric and press it.  Bring your fabric to class hung on a skirt hanger to minimize wrinkles.  This will reduce wait time at the iron and keep the class flowing.
