A Technique Class: Binding by Machine

A Technique Class: Binding by Machine

If you want your small projects completed quickly or your charity quilts to last a little longer then this is a technique you may want to try. I will show you how I attach bindings completely by machine.

I will demonstrate how you can attach your bindings with various machine stitches and techniques. You will be required to bring invisible thread, a stiletto and your sewing machine manual.  We will be adapting specialty stitches so you need to know what stitches you have and how to manipulate them.

Supplies needed:
The above mentioned are a must as well as; small quilt sandwiches, could be pot holders, placemats or orphan blocks. Scraps of left over binding that you normally use.  And 2” wide strips which we will create binding from, straight of grain or bias.  Then the usual…
Sewing machine in good working order as well as the manual (for troubleshooting)
Machine tools, screwdriver, lint brush, tweezers…
Specialty Feet, ¼” patchwork, zipper foot, edge foot, walking or free motion foot, class specific of course
Seam Guide & Sewers Edge, to keep a consist seam allowance between machines
Extra bobbins
Extra needles, universal 80/12 stay in my travel case, or class specific
Good Thread, please do this for yourself, we have all purchased Wal Mart thread and hopefully learned the error of our ways.  The machine behaves better, the stitch looks better and the project will indeed last longer with good thread.
Cutting tools, thread snips, scissors, rotary cutter and a seam ripper, we all have to do some reverse sewing sometimes.
Straight pins, flat head and glass head fine are my choices
Marking tool, chalk pencil, air/water erasable pen, Frixion pen, Clover Chako Liner, etc
Clover Wonder Clips
Needle threader, most classroom machines are not our fancy ones that have this feature
Measuring tools, rulers, seam gauge, templates. Class specific.
