Fabrics
I wanted to be sure I had enough for 2 full sneakers and 2 larger than the
pattern tongues. It should be ½ yard minimum.
Lining should be the same amount, I bought ¾ yard.
If you want binding, it must be cut on the bias, so I bought ½ yard
contrasting color.
The you need Bosal, you need about ¾ yard.
If you are choosing special fabrics, multiple pieces or directional
pieces, please purchase more.
Before class, choose which kind of sneaker you want to make, one has a bias
edge, the other just has an inside and outside. I used one of the sneaker
patters and carefully cut out the shoe so I could use the paper with the cut out
to audition fabrics.
If you are making the bias trimmed sneaker, layer outer fabric, right side up,
bosal and lining, right side down, this must be quilted. I kept the quilting about
1 inch apart. Cut out the pattern pieces and tape the two shoe pieces
together. Trace around this pattern piece and cut out 1 whole piece with
pattern right side up, and a second whole pattern piece, upside down to make
the other foot. Bias pieces should be 2 inches wide. You need 4 of them.
If you choose the sneaker without the bias, layer the outer fabric to the Bosal
and just quilt these two pieces together, then cut out the 2 shoe parts, tape
them together, trace with ¼ inch extra along the top edge of the pattern onto
fabric and cut out. Then cut out lining pieces to match. Sew the seam along
this top edge. To finish, top stitch along this edge.
Do not cut out the tongues.
Bring your sewing machine, manual and cords.
